Botox & Neuromodulators

About neuromodulators

Neuromodulators, also called neurotoxins, include Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Jeuveau, Xeomin, and Letybo. These injectable treatments temporarily relax targeted facial muscles to soften expression lines.

At Napa Derm, in Napa, California, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Caroline Campbell offers Daxxify and Xeomin, with personalized treatments based on your facial anatomy, movement, and goals.

Our approach focuses on softening unwanted lines and supporting facial balance while preserving natural expression.

Why Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are injectable treatments made from purified botulinum toxin. They temporarily reduce nerve signals to selected muscles, softening expression lines and allowing targeted adjustments to facial balance.

Treatment areas may include:

  • Upper face: Forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows (“11s”), and crow’s feet.

  • Nose: Bunny lines that appear along the sides of the nose when smiling or scrunching.

  • Lower face: Masseter injections to soften jaw width caused by enlarged muscles, and depressor anguli oris (DAO) injections to reduce downward pull at the corners of the mouth.

  • Lips: A lip flip allows more of the upper lip to show without adding volume. It creates a subtle change rather than the result of a surgical lip lift.

  • Neck and jawline: Platysmal band treatment and the “Nefertiti lift” target selected areas of the platysma to soften vertical neck bands and reduce downward pull along the jawline.

  • Trap Tox: Softening the appearance of the neck and shoulders caused by enlarged muscles and tensions

Dr. Campbell evaluates how the upper face, lower face, lips, and neck work together to plan treatment. Some treatment areas involve off-label use, depending on the product selected.

Lines caused primarily by muscle movement generally respond better than deeply established lines visible at rest. Your consultation will help determine whether neuromodulators alone or a combination of treatments best fits your goals.

When Should You Start Treatment?

There is no universal age to begin neuromodulator treatments. The decision depends on your concerns, facial movement, and whether lines remain visible when your face is at rest.

Treating early resting lines may help limit repeated folding of the skin. More established lines may also benefit from treatments that address skin texture or volume, such as laser resurfacing or dermal fillers.

Daily sunscreen and an appropriate skincare routine, which may include a retinoid, support overall skin health alongside cosmetic treatment.

How Long Do Results Last?

Duration depends on the product, dose, treatment area, and individual response. Many commonly used neuromodulators provide results for approximately three to four months.

Daxxify may provide longer-lasting improvement in frown lines. In clinical studies, more than half of patients maintained no or mild frown lines through six months. Individual results vary.

How Soon Will You See Results?

Improvement may begin within the first few days and continue over the following weeks. The timing varies by product and treatment area. We will explain when to assess your results and whether a follow-up visit is appropriate.

What Are the Risks?

Possible side effects include bruising, swelling, headache, asymmetry, and temporary eyelid or brow drooping. Depending on the treatment area, changes in chewing, lip function, or neck strength may occur. Rare serious reactions can occur.

Before treatment, Dr. Campbell will review your medical history, medications, and treatment goals. Although results gradually wear off, neuromodulators cannot be immediately reversed.

Can Neuromodulators Treat Excessive Sweating?

Botulinum toxin can reduce excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, by temporarily blocking nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands.

At Napa Derm, we evaluate and treat excessive sweating of the underarms, palms, soles, and scalp. Botox is FDA-approved for severe primary underarm sweating inadequately controlled with topical treatments.

We will discuss treatment options and whether insurance authorization may be available. Coverage depends on your plan and clinical criteria.
